Analyzing Google Adwords Keyword Selector Tool Traffic Estimator

For anyone interested in doing business online, knowing how many individuals search for a specific keyword is crucial. If I’m selling kids shoes online and only 100 people search for it on Google, then most probably I’m not going to succeed – even if my site is ranked at the top. I’ll be lucky if 10 people out of those 100 buy my shoes.

To know how many people search for a specific keyword, there are many tools available. But the most trustworthy one is Google’s Adwords Keyword Selector Tool. Because it is pulling the data from its search engine.

In the SEO community, it is common knowledge that Google’s Adwords traffic estimation tool is at best inaccurate. But no one really knows how Google measures these numbers. According to Google, it is “averaging” each month’s search volume across its search engine platforms. But for a long time I’ve been suspicious that these numbers are not real. So, finally I decided to conduct a test.

I selected six websites that we have access to their Analytics data and are ranking within the top five positions on Google search results – world-wide – for somewhat competitive keywords. The tables below illustrates my findings.

The first table are the keywords in Exact format. Which means we’re only looking at Google’s traffic for these keywords when the exact phrase is searched for as well as the traffic for the same keyword:

The following table are for the same keywords but this time using the “Phrase” selection. In other words, the searcher could have used the same phrase in conjunction with other words:

As you see the number of people visiting the site is much less than the number of monthly search volume (Traffic Estimate) regardless of whether we searched for “Phrase” or “Exact” keywords.

It is less likely that less than 10% of those searching for any given search querry are going to visit the top ranking sites.

Therefore, my conclusion is that the Traffic Estimate is blown out of proportion.

But by how much?

Looking at the numbers, we can say that these numbers are blown out of proportion by 3 times and up to 100 times depending on the search query.

Where is the success in SEO?

Another important factor is that we’re able to generate a few times more traffic to our clients’ sites than the total search volume for their main keyword(s). For example, doctorjennifer.com’s main keyword is Minneapolis Orthodontist. But this keyword only receives 58 searches each month (if that was accurate). On the other hand, the site is receiving over 1,000 hits through organic search results. The reason is that we are not just focusing on the MAIN keyword. We work on a pool of different keywords related to each site/business. Doctorjennifer.com for instance has over 100 keywords we’re targeting.

For those clients that care very much for having that top ranking placement on Google for their main keyword I have to say that that is not so important compared to being ranked for many of their keywords that may not be as popular.

In other words if our client is not ranking at the top for Minneapolis Orthodontist, they’re just losing a very small fraction of the search volume; however, there are 50 other keywords (Minneapolis Children Orthodontist, St. Paul Invisalign, Best Orthodontist in Eagan, etc.) that the client has a top five ranking. The site is going to get traffic and business from Google generated through secondary keywords.

We measure our success by the number of targeted visitors who find our clients’ sites using their keywords – main keywords as well as secondary keywords.

Make Money - Generate Traffic

If you have a website or blog and you want to generate traffic to your site you will need a cheap and easy method to generate traffic. The simple fact is that articles generate traffic and traffic makes you money whether you are publishing Adsense ads, selling Ebooks or a product of your own. If you are an affiliate marketer then this is the best way to sell your products as it is free compared to Adwords or similar pay per click advertising.

If you have a talent for writing then that is a bonus. If you can't write at all, not to worry as there are programs available that do most of the work for you. What you need ultimately is a desire and a few hours a week that you can devote to building up your sites traffic. This will be the most rewarding aspect of your online career and it will lead to profits. Why? To put it simply - the more articles you publish, the more traffic and backlinks you will get for your site. The traffic speaks for itself - more people at your site means more chances that someone will click an Adsense ad, buy a product or sign up for a newsletter. The backlinks are a huge bonus as it will lead to a higher indexing on the search engines (Google,Yahoo,MSN). The higher you get indexed the better as this will mean even more traffic.

How does this work?

It is really a pretty simple process. Lets say you have a website about dog grooming and you have optimized your site to make it Google friendly,(see SEO for Beginners for tips to optimize your website or blog)and now you need some traffic to start generating sales of your Ebook or maybe you provide helpful advise and hope for some Adsense clicks.

If you are like most newcomers you have probably taken out some Adwords advertisments. This method does work but it is expensive and if you are hoping to make money off of your Adsense ads then you will fail. The simple fact is that you will always pay more for your Adwords ads than you will receive from people clicking on your Adsense ads. If you are selling a product and have a killer sales page you might be able to make more from your sales than you pay for your ads, if this is the case then you are in the minority and I'd like to know what you are selling so I can steal it for myself.

Note: The people who make the most money from selling products online are not the affiliate advertisers like you - they are the people who write the Ebook or make the product. They make money because they have a whole army of affiliates like you who pick up the tab for advertising their product while they incur no cost to themselves. Sure they may pay you 50 - 70% commission but they still keep 30% or more without incurring any expense whatsoever. If each affiliate sells just one product a day, the affiliate might make $30 and possibly spend as much or more on ads to sell that product. The producer might make only $10 on the sale but multiply that by a hundred affiliates and the producer makes $1000 a day without spending a dime on advertising. Are you getting the picture.

The best way of generating traffic is to write a useful and helpful article about dog grooming and publish it on one or more of the available article submission sites. (For a list of top publishing sites go to Articles Make Money) You will find that people will begin downloading your article in no time and the traffic to your site will begin soon after.

The advantage of generating traffic by publishing articles is numerous.

1) Publishing articles costs you nothing but a bit of time writing them.

2) Once your article is published on the net it stays there virtually forever. Over time you will be amazed at how many times it gets read.

3) Your articles will get picked up and posted on numerous other websites who need content and this means backlinks all over the internet directing people to your site.

4) These backlinks will increase your sites ranking on the search engines. If you get listed on page 1 of Google, Yahoo or MSN then you will have all the traffic you will ever need.

5) You can pitch your product right from your article and make money without people ever reaching your website or blog.

Sure it takes longer to build traffic with articles than conventional advertising but not as long as you might think and it costs nothing. If you are in this for the long haul then there is no better way to get long term and steady traffic to your site than publishing articles.
